The Thong

Part 1

"So what do you think?" Chakotay raised his eyebrow in his best Tuvok impression.

"I don't think so. I mean it isn't really Captain Janeway is it?" Tom grinned evilly and waggled his eyebrows.

"No but is it Kathryn Janeway?" Chakotay paused; look thoughtful and then choked, causing the entire bridge to look at him. He waited till everyone had turned their attention back to their posts.

"Do you know something I don’t Mr Paris?" Tom raised his hands in mock defence.

"Look the lizard thing was a lizard thing, it isn't something I care to be reminded about it ok." Chakotay grinned.

"Hey you're the only one to have seen our Captain naked, pardon us for being interested." Tom glared at him.

"Well it looks like the crew were giving more credit than you deserved. We all thought you were sharing command codes from the word go. By the way you are desperate!" Chakotay looked shocked.

"What do you mean sharing command codes?"

"Oh come on, the sexual tension on the bridge when you first swaggered onto the bridge was practically tangible. Commander Cavit never made her look up like that!

Hell the man could barely sustain friction between two brain cells let alone a woman, how the man made commander I'll never know! Must have done it on his back or his front for that matter." Chakotay smiled and his cheeks reddened slightly,

"Well thank you for the credit. It's a great ego boost for my sexual prowess. But back to the point, do you really think she wears one of those things?" The Captain was facing Harry at his station, and both men twisted around and tilted their heads slightly to the left. Kathryn feeling their stare on her lower back, turned and said,

"Gentlemen?" Both looked up quickly and blushed,

"I think that you are right Commander, the bottom of that console does look unsteady." Tom quickly adlibbed, Chakotay nodded and moved quickly back to his chair,

"Yes ensign, I will need to get someone up to have a look at that." Kathryn looked at both of them as if they had both lost the plot.

Part 2.

The mess hall was bustling with the usual lunch hour rush. Tom walked in and grabbed the nearest tray without even checking if it was edible or not. He made a beeline straight for Chakotay, and plonked himself and his tray down opposite it.

"How about a bet Chakotay." He looked up from his meal and calmly set his fork down,

"Mr Paris, I thought you had been warned about running illegal betting rings on this ship?" There was a short pause. Tom flashed his best grin and replied,

"But this time Chakotay you could actually win and I mean more than replicator rations!" Chakotay looked intrigued,

"What on?"

"Black lace or red silk?" Chakotay once again did his Tuvok impression that was getting so good it should have been winning competitions.

"I still don't even thinks that she wears one."

"Look there is a line if you look closely."

"What have you been doing looking closely?"

"Hey you can see it when she does that bend over the console thing." Chakotay looked at him sceptically. Tom sighed,

"Don't tell me you haven't looked??!!!" Chakotay looked at his plate. Tom leaned forward and said in a low tone,

"Well how about we make the bet that you find out whether or not she does or doesn't and extra bonus if you get the material right!" He remained thoughtful,

"And what do I get out of this exactly?"

"Well if you play your cards right she'll give you more than the colour of her underwear and the added bonus is my replicator rations for two months and most romantic holodeck programme but I want proof! I get your replicator rations for 2 months and your holodeck privileges for a month"

"This holodeck programme wouldn't happen to be on the risqué side of things would it? And how can you prove that kind of thing?" He said, his voice rising slightly. He looked around quickly to make sure that no one had noticed. Tom grinned mischievously.

"Holo-image. Nothing more, nothing less. Grab the doctors camera, maybe it will end up in his next slide show. It would certainly liven things up. Although that wouldn't be all that difficult." Chakotay frowned at him.

"Don't even go there Paris ok. How the hell am I going to do this without getting caught?" Tom took a bite of food.

"That's your problem buster, but you never know getting caught could be good thing and if not…" He shrugged.

"Just flash those dimples at her." Chakotay went red, and looked around the room.

"What you're not chicken are you Commander?" Tom goaded. Chakotay flashed him a glare and replied,

"The dimple remark doesn't help, but I accept!" With that he reached across the table and shook Tom's hand. Tom glanced up as B'Elanna entered the hall and hissed,

"You have one week!"

"Not a problem, I've faced the Borg I can handle Kathryn Janeway." Tom's mocking laugh still made him feel uncomfortable.

"What was all that about?" B'Elanna queried,

"Oh nothing Chakotay just has to find out what Janeway wears underneath her uniform." B'Elanna looked blank for a moment and then replied,

"A thong, I could have told you that."

Part 3

Chakotay looked around nervously and tapped at the replicator. He jumped as his badge chirped. He tapped it.

"Yes!" He hissed quietly.

"Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock." Came an irritatingly smug voice.

"Paris get off this line!" He shouted before he realised where he was.

"I'm kinda busy at the moment." He muttered quietly.

"I thought I told you that rummaging through the underwear drawer was strictly forbidden! The rule is that I have to see some physical evidence on our dearly beloved captain." He reprimanded. Chakotay glared at the wall.

"I am aware of the rules fly boy. Let's just say that the captain will find her trousers a little more closer to her skin." Chakotay could practically see Tom's eyebrows disappearing into his hairline, and he heard a noise.

"Ensign that wouldn’t be Mr Kim I hear giggling in the background." There was a silence.

"Of course not sir." Replied Tom

"Carry on." He said before quickly cutting off communication. He sighed in relief. Harry let out his breath.

"I always knew you had a thing for the Captain." Tom looked offended.

"Look I keep telling people, that was a Lizard thing ok!" Harry nodded but didn’t look convinced.

Chakotay checked the chronometer to make sure that he still had enough time, then quietly let himself out of Kathryn's quarters a self satisfied grin on his face.

He was in early for the briefing the next morning, sitting at his seat planning his move. He looked up as she walked in stiffly and slowly lowered herself into her seat. A grin crossed his face.

"What's the matter Captain?" She grimaced.

"I think I may need a little more exercise Commander, either that or the replicators are malfunctioning." He quickly turned his face away to stifle a chuckle. He cleared his throat.

"I'll get someone to check that for you." She smiled warmly at him.

"Thank you Commander." He quickly got control of his features as the rest of the senior staff filed in for the daily briefing of the ship's systems. Tom looked at Chakotay questionably as he sat down beside B'Elanna. B'Elanna and Harry also gave the Commander pointed glances as they sat down, ready for the Captain to start and impatient to know what was going to happen.

"Any questions?" Kathryn reclined in her chair and looked around her. For some reason Tom, B'Elanna and Harry were all looking rather disappointed as if they had been expecting something.

"Is there something that I missed Commander?" She turned to Chakotay, waiting to see if he knew what was disturbing the younger members of the crew. As she turned in her chair she missed the panicked glare that Tom shot Chakotay. A thousand consequences ran through Tom's mind as he thought what the Captain would do to him including the brig and being thrown out of an airlock. 'I mean I can't really be demoted any further can I?' he thought to himself.

"I think that you covered everything Captain." Chakotay answered without missing a beat.

"Everyone dismissed." Kathryn returned cheerfully, and got up herself. Chakotay followed her lead, feeling Tom's gaze on him the entire time. As she walked past him, he shot his foot out to block her path. Tom's head swung around as he heard the Captain's gasp of shock as she narrowly avoided falling but ended up hitting the bulkhead and dropping her reports.

"Captain, I am so sorry. Let me help you pick up your reports." Tom snorted in the background as he realised what Chakotay was up to.

"Thank you Commander." He dropped onto his knee and Kathryn mimicked his movement dropping down beside him. He held his breath as he strained to hear the rip of fabric, but it didn't come. While her head was bent he, nearly toppling over, tried to manoeuvre himself so he could get a good luck at her backside. Nothing. He sent a small damn to the designers at Starfleet for making the fabric so durable. He heard Tom utter a noise of disgust from behind him, and then realised Kathryn was talking to him.

"Is there something wrong Chakotay?"

"I thought there was a padd behind you but there wasn't."

"Right. Are you sure there's nothing wrong?" shooting him a puzzled look. He stood up quickly and handed over the padds.

"Everything's fine, why do you need to talk about something?" She was about to answer when Tom butted in saying,

"Commander I need to discuss something with you." Chakotay looked up and smiled saying to Kathryn,

"Duty calls." As Tom joined him as they walked out on to the bridge,

"Tick, tock, tick, tock." He said smilingly.

"I'm not finished yet Paris!" He sat down in the Captain's chair and accessed the console,

'Time for plan B!' he thought. He starting chuckling evilly and then found that Tuvok was watching him. His head shot down and he began to study his console closely feeling like he had just been caught out by his father. But out of Tuvok's sight he rubbed his hands together and grinned.

'HAH!'

Part 4

The holodeck was bustling. The coliseum was nice design Chakotay acknowledged. Tom had really out done himself this time. He stood off to the side a little waiting for the Captain to show. He mentally patted himself on the back for this one. Kathryn was big on these social events and she could hardly say no to a toga party. He flashed his dimples and flashed his eyes over the crowd, grimacing as he realised that some people shouldn’t really have been allowed to wear a toga, Neelix was a perfect example he was seeing way more of the Talaxian than he had ever wanted to. He turned quickly as the door opened and he caught sight of someone that he did want to see more of. Kathryn walked in calmly with her toga gathered at her shoulder and reaching down to her ankles. Her hair was loose around her shoulders and she gave Chakotay a beaming smile as she walked towards him.

"Commander I have to say this was definitely a good idea, it's a great way to get the crew morale up and its fun. Certainly beats one of the doctor's slideshows." She added.

"Anything would be better than one of the doctors slide shows. Even Tuvok singing a Vulcan dirge." Kathryn grinned at him.

"True, but not by much." There was a slight pause.

"Let me get you a drink Captain." He said and wandered off to the table with a large punch bowl on it and began ladling out a cup. Tom came up and clapped him on the shoulder causing him to splash some over the table.

"So are we already to see some um…how shall I put it… butt." He gave him a lopsided grin.

"Give me a chance Tom. She's only just walked in the room!" With that he picked up the cups and strolled back to Kathryn.

"There you go." And handed her a cup. He took a sip of his own and tried to focus on his plan. He hadn't quite figured how he was going to do it, but he wasn’t going to admit it to Tom that would constitute defeat. His eyes followed her round the room, watching as she talked to various members of the crew. He smiled as she strolled back to him.

"Ever get the feeling you are being watched Commander?"

"What?" He asked confused. She gave a wry smile.

"You have been looking at me all night. I just wondered why." His mouth dropped open as he searched for an answer.

"I was just thinking." He finally replied lamely

"Thinking about what?" She pressed.

"Um..stuff." He waved his hands about vaguely.

"The way that you interact with the crew…you do it so well." She looked at him.

"Thank you Chakotay. Are you sure you're ok? You've been a little distracted lately." He shook is head.

"I'm fine, I'm just…busy at the moment." She cocked her head to the side.

"We haven't met any aliens or any trouble for weeks, the ships running at peak efficiency. What exactly are you busy with?" She asked pointedly. He looked lost.

"Um…stuff. Spiritual stuff. Um it's an important time spiritually for my people, the time of year it's very important spiritually." He grasped at straws. She didn't look convinced.

"How come you have never been this distracted before then by…spiritual stuff?" He took a deep breath.

"Ok I'll come clean. I've got a bet with Paris and I'm trying to figure out how to win it." She raised an eyebrow.

"Would you care to tell me what it is?" He looked at her sheepishly.

"Its probably better that you don’t." She pulled a fake disapproving look.

"Commander I expected better than that from you." Her face then lightened with a cheeky grin.

"I hope you win." He raised his cup again and muttered under his breath.

"So do I!" He noticed that Tom, B'Elanna and Harry walking over, and he knew it was now or never. She turned to head over towards Tuvok who was standing alone in his uniform at the other side of them room, when Chakotay stepped his foot down on the bottom of her toga, and felt the rip. The rest had reached him by this point and they all stood their heads craned to the right, trying to see how far the rip went. There was a collective muted groan as they realised it had missed the mark by a couple of centimetres. She turned round in shock.

"Captain I am so sorry, I was just going to get some more punch." He pointed to his empty cup. She looked at the line of crewmembers beside him.

"Close your mouth Harry, anyone would think that you hadn't seen a bit of thigh before." Harry closed his mouth.

"Yes Ma'am ah I mean Captain." Chakotay choked back a laugh and Tom looked pointedly at him. Kathryn turned to look at the damage on her toga and then said,

"I think this marks my exit. Goodnight everyone, it was a nice party." With that she strutted out of the holodeck, but she walked so as not to reveal more than had already shown. Seven walked towards the group and turned to ask,

"Why is the Captain leaving?" Tom smiled and answered,

"Her toga got accidentally ripped by some clumsy oaf." Chakotay sent Tom a dirty look, as Seven replied,

"That is not correct since the Commander purposely placed his foot on her costume so that it ripped." Chakotay went red and asked,

"How did you know that?"

"I was observing you Commander." Tom was laughing but still managed to get out,

"The Commander wanted something to happen but another result occurred, so technically it is an accident Seven." She looked at Chakotay blankly and then Harry butted in,

"Come with me Seven, I'll explain." The rest of the group watched knowingly as Seven allowed herself to be led away.

"The clock's still ticking Chakotay, what's plan C?"

"I can't believe the two of you. If she catches you, you'll both be scrubbing the insides of the plasma injectors with your toothbrushes for the rest of the journey. That's assuming that she takes it well and doesn't jettison you out of the torpedo ports!" muttered B'Elanna disgustedly. Tom turned and faced her,

"Oh like you don’t have a stake in this!" B'Elanna blushed and Chakotay threw up his hands,

"Invite the whole crew why don't you." He stormed out of the holodeck with Tom calling out after him,

"Tick tock Chakotay." Tom turned to B'Elanna and said,

"I feel like the crocodile in Peter Pan!"

"Who is Peter Pan???"

Part 5

He paced his room, intently in the dark. The toga thing was a bust, but it had been fun, he never realised Kathryn had such shapely thighs before, they weren't half-bad for a woman her age. He stopped and stared at the corner of the room with a vaguely silly grin on his face. Not bad at all. He shook his head, back to business; he couldn’t let Paris to win this one. Honour was at stake here dammit! He had to find out! For the bet, he had to find out for the bet! This wasn’t anything personal he assured himself, he didn’t want to know what was at the top of those not half bad thighs for himself. No! Plan C needed to be put into action.

"Computer locate Captain Janeway."

"Captain Janeway is in her quarters." Chakotay again smiled in the darkness,

"Computer, is the Captain having a shower?"

"Unable to comply. Please restate request." He sighed heavily; sometimes the computer could really get on his nerves.

"Computer, measure the level of humidity in the Captain's quarters." The computer replied and Chakotay said,

"Perfect."

He walked out of his quarters and checked up the hall. He thanked the gods that no one had decided to go for a walk at this time of night. He quietly walked toward her quarters, and for no reason a tune entered his head. It was from one of Paris's twentieth century holodeck programmes, something about impossible missions with spies. Chakotay shook his head; he couldn't afford to be distracted with trivial matters like Paris and his fetishes. He gripped the holo imager, he was glad that the Doctor had designed the more compact travel version. He reached Kathryn's door with no interference and with a deep breath he pressed the door chime. He didn't need to open the door with his command codes to find Kathryn standing there demanding to know why he had used his command codes to break into her quarters. When there was no reply, he quietly opened the door to be met with the sound of soft singing. He scanned the darkened quarters, the light softly casting a shadow on the floor from the bathroom. Chakotay strode into her bedroom and softly called,

"Kathryn? Kathryn?" Satisfied that she couldn't hear him, he was just past the bed when he tripped over her discarded boots. He fell heavily on his knees, letting go of the holo-imager to brace his weight. The holo-imager skidded under the bed and Chakotay uttered an oath under his breath. He extended his arm so that it reached under the bed but could feel nothing. He tried reaching further and was so distracted that he didn't notice the sonic shower being switched off and Kathryn coming out of her bathroom.

"Chakotay what the hell are you doing?" Chakotay slowly turned his head to see impatiently tapping bare toes. He tried to get up quickly but banged his head on the bed frame. When he finally managed to get to his feet Kathryn said in a low dangerous tone looking very imposing for a woman in a towel,

"I hope that you have a really good explanation for this." Chakotay slowly began to back out of the room.

"Well I just dropped by to leave off those engineering reports. " She raised a sceptical eyebrow,

"Under my bed?" He looked around quickly,

"I uh… dropped them." She crossed her arms,

"What? You were going to give them to me while I was in the shower." She glared at him, noticing that he wasn't going to reply and his gaze had dropped by a 45-degree angle. She quickly glanced down and spun on her heels hitching the towel tightly around her. She said over her shoulder in an angry and ominous tone,

"You had better leave Commander." Chakotay slowly woke from his stupor and recognised the tone as the one used for the Borg, Kazon and Paris. He walked backwards quickly towards the door, afraid to turn his back in case she pulled a phaser rifle on him. He breathed a sigh of relief when the doors finally closed in front of his face.

Part 6

"Paris the bet is off!" Paris looked up from his game of pool and smiled,

"I knew that you couldn't hack it. What did you lose your bottle or something?" He goaded.

"Nearly lost my life! She caught me in her quarters." Tom turned and looked at him, a new level of respect of his commanding officer on his face.

"You actually broke into her quarters? And you aren't dead, mutilated, in the brig, or worse?" He broke off his game and patted Chakotay on the back.

"Glad to see you still have some of that old Maquis spirit." He lined up his shot again.

"You know if I were a more magnanimous person I'd forfeit the bet just for that. But I'm not. I've nearly used up my privileges already." He grinned as he pocketed the shot. Chakotay stormed out of the holodeck and back to his quarters. He berated himself for even considering taking part in the bet, he was well past his academy days that sort of thing was behind him. Then an image of Kathryn, in the towel after she crossed her arms, that made it all worthwhile. He gave a lopsided grin, his dimples flashing, causing a passing female ensign to stop and stare in awe.

He looked from the endless pile of reports as his door chimed.

"Come in." He called. Kathryn stormed in. He gulped.

"Hello Captain, how are you?" She stood in front of him with her hands on her hips.

"Puzzled Commander. What the hell is going on with you?" He tried to look blank.

"I don’t know what you mean." He evaded, not meeting her eyes.

"You've been distracted, clumsily and down right weird for the past few days." He gave a weak smile.

"But weird is part of the job Captain." She pointed her finger at him.

"Don’t go there Chakotay I'm not in the mood." He sighed deeply and set the padd down.

"I'll be honest with you. Something caught my attention on the bridge the other day and I just had a burning urge to find out. I think I'm going through my midlife crisis." He gestured placatingly; Kathryn began to look interested,

"And this attention catcher includes me? What was it?" Chakotay blushed to the tips of his ears, which she thought was kinda cute. He quickly decided the best way to tell her and leaned forward to whisper into her ear. When he finished she blushed to the tips of her ears, which he thought was kinda cute. She followed this with a sexy grin and softly said,

"Why didn't you just ask me Commander?" She leant forward and whispered in his ear. His jaw dropped. He cleared his throat.

"Ah any chance of me seeing physical proof of this?"

"My my Commander aren't we becoming forward." He glanced down.

"I am aren't I." He grinned at her and pulled her into his arms, kissing her gently on the lips.

Later whilst in bed.

"So Paris was wrong after all." He muttered an ecstatically happy smile on his face.

"Paris? What the hell does Paris have to do with this?" Chakotay muttered,

"Nothing."

"This wouldn't have to do with that bet that you mentioned at the party." She asked suspiciously, Chakotay remained silent.

"I'm going to kill him!"

Next morning in the mess hall.

"So Vorik stands up, problem is that Susan is already off balance. So he pushes her over landing on top of her …" Tom stopped as a shadow fell across his table. Both he and B'Elanna looked up,

"Good morning Captain." B'Elanna said.

"Lieutenant, Ensign." She replied stressing the last word. Tom began to look worried,

"Ahh how may we help you Captain?" A padd was thrust into his hands as Kathryn said,

"I believe that you owe Chakotay two months replicator rations and your most romantic holodeck programme." With that she turned on her heel and left. Tom glanced down at the padd. A small smile crept across his face and he pushed the padd toward B'Elanna,

"I believe that you and Harry owe me two months of replicator rations." B'Elanna looked at Tom sceptically and then looked down at the padd. Her Klingon brow furrowed further and she said,

"What is Chakotay doing in this picture." Tom started to laugh, reaching out and turning the padd in her hands. Her head tilted slightly to the left and a look of horror passed across her face as she cried,

"Oh my Kahless!"
